The Flagler Legacy

The Flagler Legacy - ©2017

Patrick Michael O’Grady IV, better known by friends and family as Rick, returned to his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida with his new Harvard Law degree, eager to pass the Florida Bar and join his father’s law firm. The O’Shea Family Trust Fund, originally established by the wealthy Henry M. Flagler in 1897, was funded annually by Flagler’s company, Florida East Coast Railway (FECR), to the oldest living namesake of Patrick Michael O’Shea.

In 1976, the Trust had been declared invalid by the Florida Supreme Court, upon the litigation of the chairman of FECR, Edward Ball, brother-in-law of the now-deceased millionaire, Alfred DuPont, and then reputed to be the most powerful man in Florida. Rick’s goal, once he passed the Bar, was to find the means to have this judgment reversed and restore the annual payment to his family Trust Fund. At the age of 26, this tall, handsome new graduate was not considered a threat by Mr. Ball.

After Rick settled into his new apartment, he was awakened by an enormous explosion near his new home. The FECR Broward Yard had been blown up, raising fears that the multi-year battle between Ball and his employees over wages had been renewed, despite recent court decisions and jail terms to the contrary. Investigations soon proved that the O’Shea family was not involved, but rather an unidentified foreign national was threatening to purchase the FECR or destroy it if refused.

In the interim, the eightieth birthday party of Rick’s grandfather, Patrick Michael O’Shea, Junior, gave Rick an opportunity to meet the beautiful Chandra Jones, a popular television news reporter and prominent young African-American personality. She invited him to lunch the following week, where she revealed her research on the O’Shea family and sought his cooperation in pursuing their joint interests in legal research on the dispute with FECR. He agreed, and the two young people began a research quest starting with local newspaper files and continuing into other cities, and even to France, in pursuit of the mysterious rich foreigner behind a terrorist plot to blow up the centers of five large American cities. The terrorists needed the FECR to covertly transport the bombs to the city targets.

The young couple’s research became intertwined with the security agencies of several countries. A British MI6 agent discovered that the Broward Yard bomb was directed by the terrorists to threaten Ed Ball. The agent travelled to Uzbekistan to locate the source of the bomb factory and he learned of the freighter transporting them to the United States.

The plot was discovered and foiled, despite the freighter being re-named and docking in Savannah, Georgia rather than its Port Everglades, Florida destination. The young Jacksonville couple, finished their terrifying adventure as worldwide American heros. Ed Ball renounced his seemingly innocent role in the plot by deeding the entire FECR to the O’Shea Family Trust. Rick and Chandra were married the following year on the riverside lawn of Epping Forest, the DuPont family home.

Beyond The Pyramids - ©2014

Ramcon is an American consultant firm located in Egypt to plan and develop the Egyptian government's proposed new city of "Ramses", fifty miles north of Cairo. A lengthy series of errors in soil and survey data from Egyptian government sources has been hindering the Ramcon team's progress for several months. Ramcon's head office in New York sends a senior engineer to Cairo with a technical solution for this problem, but he inexplicably disappears after landing at Cairo airport, and Egyptian police are baffled by his disappearance. Next morning, Ramcon Manager Mike Harrington receives an unexpected phone call from an engineer friend in Scotland, claiming he has vital information on Ramcon's problem, which is too delicate for phone or telex communication.

Reluctantly leaving Cairo, Harrington flies to London that afternoon and meets his petroleum engineer friend near the airport. While visiting an oil platform off the Scottish coast, his friend had overheard an inebriated Saudi engineering intern reveal an active plan for a terrorist uprising by a secret Islamist group, the Abdullah Brotherhood. Distressed by his inadvertent revelation, the young Saudi apparently committed suicide that night by jumping fifty feet into the North Sea. Harrington's concern lies with the terrorist plan which included a new capital city being developed at a secret Egyptian location. This sounded like Ramcon's contract for a new city.

Harrington next flies to New York to confer with his CEO and is informed that the CIA and its counterparts in Britain, Israel and the Arabic nations are already involved in the case. He returns to Cairo and becomes immersed, along with CIA agents and newsmen, in the exposing of a revolutionary scheme against all Middle East countries. Additional Ramcon professionals are kidnapped prior to the surprising climax involving all 22 Arab nations and Israel.

The Magic Number - ©2010

This memoir relates how David Forster Parker overcame a troubled adolescence in a small Canadian city to achieve international prestige in guiding the development of some of the largest new communities in the world. It traces his ancestry of English and Scottish immigrants to Canada in the mid-nineteenth century and the emergence of his revered father from a one-room-schoolhouse education to president of a manufacturing industry during the Great Depression, thereby earning sufficient funds to construct a comfortable house for his family and send all five of his children to university. It explores the author’s failure to achieve academic success until his late twenties, after he married and began his own family.

Beginning after his thirtieth birthday, Parker’s career rapidly escalated to development management of Audubon New Community outside Buffalo, New York, then the creation of Sadat City in Egypt, and generating private housing development in Milton Keynes New City in England; followed by an international consultant career from a Florida home base.

David and Marilynn raised four sons who produced eight grandchildren, all of whom attended his seventy-fifth birthday at their Atlantic Beach home in 2009, a three-day event organized by his wife and family and attended by his four siblings as well as many other relatives and friends from near and far. He plans to keep on offering his consultant services for the indefinite future.

The Professors New World - a short story by David F Parker

The Professor's New World - ©2017

Milton Albert Feinstein was a soft-spoken man of average height and trim body. He had a pleasant face and healthy complexion under well-trimmed grey hair. On the day before his seventy-fourth birthday in 2060, he stood alone in the large observation room, which, other than the elevator core and bathrooms, occupied the entire eighty-fifth floor of the Windsor Building in the new city of Corbu, Florida.

Milton was quietly gazing out the west windows at an identical building, named Abbott in honor of his Grandfather, on the other side of the vast Central Park, bathed in complimentary shades of green. This enormous park was bigger that its namesake in New York City: one-half mile in width and stretching a mile in length, from the city’s main entrance on the south perimeter to terminate with a large outdoor amphitheater shielding the city’s freight entrance on the north. He believed it to be the showpiece and activity canter, of this city of the future.

And yet, critics in the press and academic community were harsh in their criticism of his team’s work, without having even seen this initial stage of construction. Nevertheless, it was down there, on his birthday, that the President of the United States and the British Duke of Windsor would officially declare the opening of the model new city of the future — his new city, really, insofar as it had been his dream after recuperating from the terrible tragedy that caused him to re-consider the purpose of his life some thirty-three years ago in New York City.

Corbu - City of the Future 2060

Corbu - City of the Future 2060 - ©2017

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier (French: [lə kɔʁbyzje]; October 6, 1887 – August 27, 1965), was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now called modern architecture. He was born in Switzerland and became a French citizen in 1930. His career spanned five decades; he constructed buildings in Europe, Japan, India, and North and South America.

Dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities, Le Corbusier was influential in urban planning, and was a founding member of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Le Corbusier prepared the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India, and contributed specific designs for several buildings there.

On July 17, 2016, seventeen projects by Le Corbusier in seven countries were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites as "an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement".

Le Corbusier is the impetus of this novel about the City of the Future for 2016.  It will be ready in 2017.
